Red tea is a well known drink of South Africa. It is mainly brewed from the leaves of Aspalathis linear plant which are oxidized and dried. Essentially red tea is not real tea but a tisane, due to it is not containing the leaves of Camellia sinensis, the tea bush.

Some companies in South Africa produce red tea  and export it to other countries, since it is popular in a lot of other parts of the world and it is also an habitual tea offered at houses and restaurants as well as it is also able to be easily found in markets.

Sometimes people also call this drink rooibos referring to the parent plant. In Afrikaans, the hybrid language of Dutch that is spoken in South Africa the meaning of rooibos is red bush. Native Africans have used the leaves of this bush to make tisanes for thousand of years as well since the explorers of European were introduced to red tea they got a taste for it. While the usual name of red tea is technically not right, it becomes so pervasive that it is usually thought acceptable, except by tea purists.

We can only see the plant of rooibos has grown in a small region of South Africa. Most in the summer, the leaves are harvested, then lightly bruised, and allowed to oxidize, which turns them red. After a period of oxidation, the tea is dried and packaged for sale. We can also find green rooibos processed from fresh leaves which are sooner dried without oxidation. In South Africa, red tea is much existing and very popular beverage. The flavor is mild and earthy, with faint mineral tones and a natural sweetness.

Red tea does not contain tannins or caffeine, therefore it is safe enough for people on diets and somebody with health matters. When steeped, the tea acquires a rich red color, and it can enjoyed plain or lightly sweetened and dressed with milk. Some people enjoy red tea iced as well, and it is often offered as a thirst quenching drink in hot weather.They also trust that red tea contains some benefits.
